Dark cell change (arrows) is a common artifact, reflecting touching/manipulating an incompletely fixed specimen and may even occur in suboptimal perfusion fixed specimens in a research setting. Pyramidal cortical neurons show shrinkage, discoloration and corkscrew apical dendrites. (H&E)
