6D2,3 This toothpaste lesion is unusual in that the neurofilament immunoreactive axons are disorganized, often swollen or smudged in comparison to the adjacent intact tracts. This change likely reflects mechanical axonal damage during the traction produced on the cord during the post-mortem removal process (NF IHC)
