Typical hypoxic/ischemic necrosis (aka eosinophilic neuronal necrosis, ENN) in the hippocampus of an adult shows numerous neurons with eosinophilic cytoplasm and early nuclear pyknosis (blue arrows). Increased microglia are also present (red arrows) (H&E).
