One micron thick plastic section of the gracile nucleus of a 14 month old rat demonstrates numerous dystrophic elements which have a complex substructure. None of the large blue swellings represent neuronal cell bodies, only individual swollen synapses/preterminal axons (toluidine blue stained one micron plastic section)
