Washington University Experience | BASIC PROCESSES | Neuroaxonal dystrophy | 1A1 Neuroaxonal dystrophy, gracile (Case 3) H&E 6
The gracile nucleus in the medulla (area enclosing arrows),a site of terminations of axons originating in lumbosacral dorsal root ganglia, routinely develops markedly swollen nerve terminals as a function of age and a number of metabolic and genetic conditions. Although they resemble other axonal swellings, they develop spontaneously along the axons and contain distinctive tubulovesicular and autophagic content (H&E). In this gracile nucleus of an aged person, individual swellings are visible, even at low magnification (arrows)
