11E Case 11 Interpretation
Interpretation: This neurosurgical specimen shows debris and absent inflammation with H&E stains. Although the axonal population is substantially lost in the NF IHC preparation, myelin stained material shows, surprisingly, apparent preservation. Our interpretation is that the biopsy region shows downstream CNS tract degeneration in which myelin is being removed at a significantly slower pace than Wallerian degeneration in the PNS. If the area was included in an infarct, both myelin and axon loss would have occurred nearly simultaneously.
