Washington University Experience | BASIC PROCESSES | Transneuronal Degeneration | 6A1 Transneuronal degeneration (LGN) (Case 6) layers 1-6 H&E copy
Case 6 History ---- There is very little history available on this old case. The patient was an 85 year old female with complications from osteoporosis, pulmonary edema and a history of congenital glaucoma with prominent involvement of right eye and optic nerve. ---- At autopsy the brain weighed 1220g. On cut section there was gross discoloration and atrophy of the right optic nerve and portions of both optic tracts and some subtle changes in the lateral geniculate nuclei. ---- 6A1 This low magnification image of the LGN shows the selectivity of transneuronal degeneration for certain layers when only one eye is involved, sparing some laminae (arrow) and affecting others (arrowhead).
