The cerebral hemispheres are entirely missing accompanied by loss of basal ganglia and much of the thalamus with preservation of brainstem and cerebellum shown in situ. It may be difficult in some cases to separate hydranencephaly/encephaloclastic processes from primary brain malformations, athough the former usually occur with fewer accompanying somatic changes and preservation of some caudal brain regions..
