Washington University Experience | DEVELOPMENTAL MALFORMATIONS | Encephalocele | 13A3 Encephalocoele (Case 13) 3
The neurosurgical specimen is a mixture of skin and underlying cerebral cortex. ---- Not shown: Sections (missing from file) of the encephalocele show cerebral cortical tissue with numerous developmental abnormalities. The meninges are focally fibrotic and in many regions are associated with prominent glial heterotopias with occasional bizarre, reactive glial cells. The cortex focally shows a lamination pattern consistent with that of polymicrogyria. The subcortical brain tissue shows marked gliosis and a glial heterotopia is associated with the choroid plexus. The skin shows central ulceration and glial heterotopias in the deep layers of the dermis.
