14B1-3 Sections of the cerebral hemispheres show focal polymicrogyria with fusion of the molecular layers. Rare foci of mineralized tissue accompany areas of apparent remote necrosis. In some areas the superficial cortex and adjacent leptomeninges show ectopic glial islands; these islands rarely extend into the fused molecular layers. The subarachnoid space demonstrates large numbers of thin walled vasculature. The underlying white matter is pale with perivascular and parenchymal calcifications and astrocytosis. (H&E)
