19A1 Encephalocoele (Case 19) with CSF leak H&E 6
Case 19 History ---- The patient is a 47yo female with a history of spontaneous cerebrospinal fluid leak/rhinorrhea and known anterior cranial dysraphism in the region of the cribriform plate. The leak did not resolve following an attempt at endoscopic repair. There has been no clinically evident meningitis. Operative procedure: Bifrontal craniotomy for repair of CSF leak ---- 19A1-5 Sections of sinus contents from the posterior ethmoid sinus show normal ciliated respiratory epithelium fragments accompanied by discrete nodules of neuroglial tissue. The findings are consistent with heterotopic neuroglial tissue in the setting of cranial dysraphism (i.e., an encephalocele).
