Case 21 History ---- The patient is an eight year old female with a nasal mass. Clinical diagnosis: Frontal encephalocele. Operative procedure: Craniotomy and repair of encephalocele. ---- 21A1,2 Sections of the material from the nasal cavities and frontal lobe area show a neural tube (dysraphic) defect composed of fibrofatty tissue, skeletal muscle, and bone with focal chronic inflammation and hemosiderin deposition. Adjacent to, and in continuity with this tissue is disorganized neuroglial tissue composed of NeuN immunoreactive neurocytes and admixed ganglion cells. (H&E)
