Washington University Experience | DEVELOPMENTAL MALFORMATIONS | Encephalocele | 5D1 Encephalocoele (Case 5) NeuN 3
A whole mount of the specimen immunostained for the neuronal marker showing a neuronal complement to glial elements. Centrally, brain matter is present. The outer rim of brain tissue is gliotic and richly eosinophilic, extends focal projections ('glial fingers') into the outer vascular layer, and is almost completely devoid of neurons and axons (verified by Neu-N and neurofilament immunostains). (NeuN IHC)
