Case 1 - Brain of a four day old premature neonate born at 24 weeks gestational age. ---- A portion of the germinal matrix (arrow) adjacent to the ventricle wall shows streaming of immature cells (arrows, 1A2) away from the matrix and into the developing subcortical white matter (#1A3,4) destined for the periphery. Note that many migrating cells are spindled (arrow, 1A4) and resemble microglial cells. After 20 weeks of gestation, the cells residual in the germinal matrix and migrating out are not neuroblasts, which by that time have migrated to the cortical preplate.
