3A1 Dentate Immature Cells (Case 3) H&E 1
Case 3 - This child was born at term and survived 11 weeks after lung transplantation. ---- The region of the dentate gyrus is increased in cellularity in which spindled cells (arrows, 3A2,3) are collected adjacent to the neurons of the dentate gyrus. Frequently, these spindled cells are mistaken for microglia. I have found it difficult to determine the origin and fate of these cells in this case. They are late for arriving neuroblasts and the dentate gyrus is already well populated by more mature neurons. They are not associated with ongoing neuronal degeneration and loss as expected for microglial neuronophagia. Could they be arriving glioblasts?
