5B1 Same area of occipital cortex as in #5A1 stained with NeuN (a marker of post-mitotic cells differentiating into neurons) demonstrates the immature cerebral cortex (arrow), particularly the deeper cortical layers established first but not the deep periventricular germinal matrix (arrowheads). This result is expected in fetuses more than 20 weeks gestation in which only glioblasts remain in the germinal matrix (NeuN IHC).
