Washington University Experience | EPILEPSY | Hippocampal Sclerosis | 9A1 Hippocampal sclerosis (Case 9) H&E whole mount
Case 9 - This patient was a 36 year old man with seizures since the age of 6. ---- This whole mount shows a fairly typical appearance of hippocampal sclerosis which frequently involves Sommer's sector (CA1, a part of which is marked with arrows) with thinning of the pyramidal layer. In some cases it may be difficult to identify certain parts of the hippocampal formation; however, the dentate gyrus and (at least partially) the ventricular layer with a few residual neurons in between (arrows) may permit its identification in surgical specimens, even those submitted as fragments.
