Small numbers of neurons are typically seen in the subcortical or deeper white matter of the cerebral cortex, particularly in the temporal lobe. However, in a number of cases, which represent seizure foci by electrophysiologic monitoring, there are significantly larger number of neurons in the white matter (arrow) than "normal" cortex.
