This is the brain of a neonate with fulminant purulent bacterial meningitis caused by beta hemolytic streptococcus. ---- Notice that the crests of the gyri are relatively free of pus. The pus parallels the vasculature in the sulci. The intervening gyri are quite hyperemic.
