Case 10 History ---- The patient was a 1 week old male, born at 29 weeks gestation. He developed an intestinal perforation with a subsequent stormy course. Gentamicin-resistant E. coli septicemia followed and he began having seizures. CSF was notable for 4000 nucleated cells (mostly PMNs) of 12,450 total cells, glucose of 3, protein greater than 600 and gram negative bacteria seen on gram stain c/w E. coli meningitis. Cranial ultrasound showed intraventricular and subependymal hemorrhages with ventriculomegaly c/w ventriculitis. He was terminally weaned from the ventilator given his poor neurological prognosis.
