Case 7 History ---- This 38 year old woman, who was 12 weeks postpartum, had a history of cocaine abuse was found unresponsive. She had fever, vomiting and neck stiffness 2 days prior to admission. She was admitted completely unresponsive. LP evidence (protein 862, glucose <20, 2218 WBC (mostly PMNs) and gram positive cocci (culture proven Streptococcus pneumoniae) were most consistent with bacterial meningitis. Serial brain death examinations were completed and she was pronounced dead.
