Case 12 History ---- The patient was a 1 week old male, born at 29 weeks to an 18 year-old. He had an intestinal perforation complicated by spells of apnea and bradycardia. His course then became complicated by leucopenia, DIC, episodes of respiratory distress, and a metabolic acidosis. He developed E. coli septicemia and seizures. CSF was notable for 4K nucleated cells of 12K total cells (predominantly PMNs), a glucose of 3, protein greater than 600 and gram negative bacilli on gram stain c/w E. coli meningitis. Cranial ultrasound at that time showed intraventricular and subependymal hemorrhages with ventriculomegaly c/w ventriculitis. On 12/24, he was terminally weaned from the ventilator given his poor neurological prognosis.
