In this case there is a distinctive pattern of hypoxic/ischemic damage more typically seen in premature infants. This pattern, designated ponto-subicular necrosis, involves eosinophilic neuronal necrosis in the subiculum (arrows) and in the pons with prominent astrocytosis (#1F1). (H&E)
