Higher magnification of the perivascular cell collections. The workup by the original investigators showed that the cells contained acid fast bacilli (AFB) which were also PAS and Luxol fast blue positive. ---- There are no classical granulomas with multinucleated giant cells or necrotic material and the vessels within the infiltrate are not angionecrotic as might be expected in granulomatous angiitis. The workup and AFB staining ruled out Whipple disease.(AANP Diagnostic Slide Session 1995, Case 6)
