Lesions are characterized by a mixed inflammatory infiltrate and scattered amoeba trophozoites (arrow, H&E) surrounded by reactive astrocytosis and an infiltrate of lymphocytes, plasma cells, histiocytes, including epithelial forms (sometimes forming poorly structured granulomata), macrophages, and neutrophils.
