1B1-8 HIV encephalitis (HIVE) predominantly involving the gray matter of the cerebral cortex: ---- A large microglial nodule in the lower cortex consists of neuronal loss, occasional lymphocytes, microglia and mononuclear/histiocytic elements, macrophages and astrocytosis with perivascular cuffing. Similar lesions are found in multiple brain regions, including frontal, occipital, temporal and parietal lobes. (H&E)
