Washington University Experience | INFECTION | Viruses | Herpes Simplex type I (HSV-1) | HSV-I Encephalitis | 3A0 Case 3 History
Case 3 History ---- The patient was an 80 year old man with a history of multiple myeloma, renal insufficiency and deteriorating mental status, for which he received multiple drugs including Decadron. After complaining of left leg cramping and numbness on the dorsum of his left foot, he developed generalized seizures. He experienced status epilepticus refractory to the usual modes of therapy and was comatose. The unexplained seizures combined with evidence of temporal lobe localization thought consistent with HSV encephalitis. Antibiotic therapy was discontinued and Acyclovir begun. He developed pulmonary hypertension with right ventricular dysfunction. He continued to deteriorate neurologically and remained comatose, dying soon after.
