Case 2 History ---- The patient was a 65 year old man with an unremarkable past medical history who presented in an acute confusional state which rapidly progressed to coma over the next 24 hours. An MRI scan early in his course was interpreted as unrevealing but with the onset of fever, he was treated prophylactically with Acyclovir. A repeat CT scan demonstrated diffuse cerebral edema. As he began to recover at the end of the 4 week process, he developed deep vein thrombosis and suddenly massive pulmonary embolism and died.
