Case 1 History ---- This patient was born via C-section at 35 weeks for prolonged rupture of fetal membranes and maternal fever with foul vaginal discharge. The child developed pulmonary difficulties within a day of birth which progressed during his course. Progressive hepatic failure and DIC developed within a few days of his death at 8 days of life. General autopsy findings included Cowdry type A inclusions in lungs, liver, spleen, adrenal gland and esophagus. There was evidence for either neonatal or intrauterine viral infection, although there was no definitive evidence of active maternal HSV2.
