1H1,2 A similar pattern to BRAFv600E is seen with immunoreactivity for p53 with prominent enlarged nuclei (P53 IHC) It is thought that JCV T protein binds cellular p53 (a tumor suppressor gene product), which as a result loses its normal down regulating influence on the cell cycle. It is thought that this binding stabilizes p53 and prolong its half life, leading to its immunohistochemical detection. JCV infected oligodendrocytes and bizarre looking astrocytes immunostain strongly for p53. (p53 IHC)
