11A0 Case 11 History
Case 11 History ---- The patient was a 45 year old homosexual male, diagnosed with HIV 6 years prior and treated with AZT for 2 years (discontinued for unspecified side effects). PML was diagnosed from CSF by PCR following a one month history of acute onset of speech, memory and visual impairment. MRI scan showed left sided posterior temporo-parietal white matter changes consistent with PML, biopsy confirmed. The patient was put on a trial of intravenous cytosine-arabinoside. His neurological deficit progressed to a dense right-sided hemiparesis and global aphasia and he died shortly thereafter.
