11H1,2 An SV40 stain which cross reacts with JC virus is positive in many cells with small, medium, and large nuclei. Typically SV40 immunoreactivity is not as strong in astrocytes (which are not productively infected even though they are infected and contain the viral genome) as are infected oligodendroglia.
