2E3,4 In the astrocyte rich area swollen astrocytes (arrows, 2E3) have very little SV40 staining in their nuclei in comparison to oligodendroglia (arrowhead, 2E3). Other astrocytes are identified by their pale swollen cell bodies (arrowhead, 2E4). It is thought that astrocytes do not generate large amounts of JC protein as they are not productively infected in comparison to oligodendroglia (SV40 IHC)
