This whole mount of the hippocampus of the patient shows little histopathologic effect of the extensive involvement by the rabies virus. There is a marked disparity between the abundance of virus and the limited degree of inflammation leptomeningeal and parenchymal lymphocytic infiltrates and neuronophagia. The microabscess (arrow) contained Candida (H&E).
