Case 1 History ---- This 53 year old man with a history of congenital rubella syndrome was deaf, blind, and profoundly mentally retarded. On the day of admission he was noted to have an increased respiratory rate, decreased overall activity, a low grade fever and possible bronchitis. The impression at subsequent admission was of a hyperosmolar state due to diabetes insipidus with severe hypernatremia. During his stormy course he developed large numbers of antibiotic-resistant bacteria in his urine and tracheal cultures. Care was redirected and he passed away
