Gross pathology of SSPE ---- The distribution and severity of pathology vary, but typical lesions involve cerebral cortex, underlying white matter and deep gray. ---- 1A1,2 Coronal sections of the brain at the level of the anterior commissure shows loss of demarcation of the cortical gray/white junction (arrow, 1A1), granularity and edema of the white matter and expansion and pallor of the the basal ganglia and internal capsule.
