6C1-7 This area of the hippocampus shows a particularly well preserved area (6C1) in which individual degenerating neurons are seen. Many of the nuclei show a variegated viral appearance different than the appearance of pyknotic neurons seen in hypoxia/ischemia. WNV viruses do not produce distinctive nuclear or cytoplasmic inclusions as viewed with light microscopy. (H&E)
