2A0 - Case 2 History
Case 2 History ---- The patient was a 41 year old female with a complex medical history: type II diabetes mellitus for 11 years, peripheral vascular disease, bilateral below-the-knee amputations, multiple episodes of diabetic ketoacidosis, chronic kidney disease, blindness in the right eye (due to trauma), hypertension and asthma. The patient was found at home unresponsive and foaming at the mouth. EMS was called and they reported that her blood glucose was 20. She was given D50 and Narcan, but was still unresponsive. Her blood glucose upon admittance to our hospital was 36mg/dl. A head CT showed no acute intracranial abnormality at that time. An EEG showed severe generalized slowing. The patient did not improve over the course of the first 24 hours. The patient remained comatose through the duration of her admission. The patient began to have decerebrate posturing and no corneal reflex. She expired 5 days after admission.
