Washington University Experience | METABOLIC | Kernicterus | 3B4 Kernicterus (Case 3) ION neuron loss & Luschka foramena H&E 1
Microscopic examination at several magnifications showed severe neuronal cell loss and gliosis involving the inferior olivary nuclei. (H&E) ---- Other involved areas (not shown) included the cerebellar dentate nuclei, Purkinje and granule cells. ---- Kernicterus may result in neuron loss and gliosis (often termed post-icteric encephalopathy). In classical kernicterus occurring in full term infants with hemolytic anemia, the globus pallidus is almost invariably involved; however, in premature infants (this patient was born at 30 weeks gestation), the lesions of kernicterus may be distributed in very atypical patterns.
