Pontine neurons are similarly distended with lipopigment. ---- Not shown: Significant numbers of senile plaques, neurofibrillary tangles, Pick bodies, ballooned cells or "glial plaques" are not demonstrated in H&E and Bielschowsky stained material. The underlying digitate and deeper white matter show mild focal pallor which is not accompanied by significant numbers of reactive astrocytes. Sections of the deep gray nuclei also demonstrate ballooned neurons.
