Washington University Experience | METABOLIC | Wernicke Encephalopathy | 2A0 Case 2 History
Case 2 History ---- The decedent was a 48 year old woman with a 9 month history of chronic myelogenous leukemia who had undergone chemotherapy and two failed bone marrow transplant procedures from haploidentical donors. Her terminal hospital course was complicated by neutropenic fever, sepsis with Prevotella buccae, BK virus viremia, group B streptococcus urinary tract infection, pancytopenia requiring multiple transfusions and mental status changes described as suspicious for Wernicke's encephalopathy. She eventually developed hypercapnic respiratory failure with multifocal pneumonia. Despite antibiotics and full ventilatory support her condition continued to deteriorate and she became hypotensive and expired.
