The whole mount of the pons shows an unusual triangular basis pontis apparently caused by loss of some of the descending corticospinal and transverse tracts with astrocytosis. Special stains show myelin loss in the corticospinal and transverse tracts and loss of axons as well with neurofilament immunohistochemistry
