Sections of the hippocampi are small for age. The lateral geniculate nucleus is difficult to identify grossly. The periventricular white matter caudal to the hippocampus appears thin, suggestive of loss of the projections from the lateral geniculate nucleus to the striate cortex (i.e., the geniculocalcarine tract).
