11P1-4 SMI-31 shows multiple small vacuoles in individual muscle fibers. In normal muscle SMI-31 only stains axon bundles. In diseases like sporadic inclusion body myositis, phosphorylated neurofilament-like proteins abnormally accumulate inside the skeletal muscle fibers, forming sarcoplasmic or subsarcolemmal protein aggregates.
