Case 1 History ---- The patient is a 20 year old man with history of cystinosis, status post kidney transplant in 2003, who presents with muscle weakness for approximately three years. The pattern in this patient is most consistent with intermediate (juvenile) cystinosis. This form features identical symptoms to the infantile form, but patients present later in childhood or early adolescence with slower progression. Operative procedure: Right deltoid muscle biopsy. ---- 1A1-3 Routine H&E stains show fiber size variation and a subpopulation of fibers with clear vacuoles. (H&E)
