Atrophic perifascicular muscle cells show increased numbers of sarcolemmal folds and marked loss of the sarcomeric fibrillary apparatus (electron micrographs) ---- Interpretation: Muscle fiber atrophy is most prominent at the edge of some fascicles. COX staining is diffusely reduced especially in muscle fibers at the edge of fascicles. The pattern of abnormality may be seen in both children and adults associated with myopathy, rash and occasionally calcinosis.
