The cristae patterns are abnormal with parallel thin cristae; however, there are no matrix inclusions or structured crystals. Small groups of abnormal mitochondria are seen focally and numerous lipid droplets with associated mitochondria are noted. These findings represent mild mitochondrial abnormalities we called mitochondriopathy. (electron micrographs) ---- Not shown: COX and SDH show a suggestion of enlarged mitochondria in some muscle fibers and a few muscle fibers with overall increased staining. There is no storage material on PAS or Sudan. The NM Division workup suggests probable mitochondrial myopathy. Mitochondrial oxidative enzyme activities and coenzyme Q10 could not be measured because of insufficient material quantity.
