Note the intimate interaction of serpiginous mitochondria with large fat droplets in the subsarcolemmal space. (electron micrographs) ---- Not shown: COX shows large punctate stained regions in muscle fibers; however, there is no mitochondrial proliferation on SDH, nor storage material on PAS. Scattered muscle fibers show mildly increased size of lipid droplets on Sudan stain. ---- Interpretation: The changes could suggest a mitochondrial disorder. Mitochondrial oxidative enzyme analysis; however, showed normal activities.
