18B Paraspinal Muscle electron micrographs: ---- 18B1A-H No nemaline rods were encountered. There was a surfeit of mitochondrial alterations but not every fiber was involved. There are collections of large numbers of mitochondria in subsarcolemmal distribution and smaller collections deeper in intermyofibrillar spaces in the fibers. The subsarcolemmal mitochondria are more numerous than in typical biopsies of appendicular muscle fibers. Nonetheless, the mitochondria were abnormally shaped, some in rings, others associated with lipid droplets and included those with numerous mitochondria containing parking lot inclusions.
