The subsarcolemmal mitochondria are more numerous than in typical biopsies of appendicular muscle fibers. Nonetheless, the mitochondria were abnormally shaped, some in rings, others associated with lipid droplets and included those with numerous mitochondria containing parking lot inclusions.
